Mercantile ATMs have been known to debit American cards without dispensing the cash. The withdrawal posts to your account. The bills never come out of the machine.
If it happens, call your American bank. Report that the ATM charged the amount without dispensing the cash. The bank will issue a provisional credit, typically within a day or two, and run an investigation in the background. Your money is back in the account while they sort it out.
