Ingredients

Raised salt painting is a classic kids’ art activity that works for almost every age, from toddlers and up. All you need is glue, salt, and watercolors to create this simple, fun project, also known as salty watercolors.

Materials:

Cardstock or sturdy paper (print templates below)
White glue
Table salt
A shallow dish or tray
Liquid watercolors
Paintbrushes

Liquid watercolors work best, but watered-down food coloring also works.

Instructions:

Step 1: Outline your shapes using glue

Step 2: Sprinkle Salt

Pour salt generously over the glue until every line is coated. Lift the paper slightly and tap off any extra salt.

Working inside a tray or baking dish makes cleanup much easier.

Step 3: Add the color!

Dip your paintbrush into the liquid watercolor, then very, very gently touch it to the salt-covered glue lines. Watch as the color spreads along the salt. You can also use a medicine dropper for better control.

For best results, you may want to split this project into two days. Let the glue and salt dry completely first, then paint the next day.

Let the artwork dry completely before moving or displaying it.

This can take a full day or two, depending on how much glue and paint was used.
